Melonie Moon is an illustrator who enjoys creating anime-style artwork using vibrant colors and a healthy dose of imagination. She enjoys bringing to life manga-inspired game characters, super heroes, cartoons and even cute animals. Melonie is looking forward to meeting art fans at AMA-Con, where she will be available to do sketches and commissions.

Meet AMA-Con 2015 Artist Roman Morales of Third Empire Studios

An Artist’s Portrait of Himself:

I was born a poor, caramel-skinned child in Riverside, California, 50 years ago.  I grew up in the age of a newborn Marvel Comics and had several friends who were totally into the Golden Age of Comics. I was a fan of the Incredible Hulk (surprise!).

I loved comics, and as I grew up, attempted to draw them (characters and all) but had a rough start.  My father was a hard working man and when I told him I wanted to be an artist, he said: “That is not a job, you are dreaming; a real job is working hard with your hands”. Well, it didn’t keep me from trying.

After my service in the United States Marine Corps, I was convinced to attend my first comic con in 1991, San Diego Con.  I walked in all cocky, but was soon humbled by editors, publishers, and writers who showed me I had much to learn.  After licking my wounds, I got my first (unpaid) job in comics with Greater Mercury Comics.  I did a couple of books with them, moving on to a new and exciting company just forming called Chaos Comics where I was teamed up with writer and creator Brian Pulido who got me started with a book called The Lynch Mob – a 4 issue mini-series that did pretty well at the beginning.  I did some Lady Death and Evil Ernie cards for Chaos 24 and then moved on to do a few more books with Bishop Press and Comico (I didn’t get paid by them either). 

I continued to work towards the dream and reality of wanting to be a comic book artist, and got somehow turned onto an editor for Marvel’s Special Projects department named Glenn Herdling, who gave me an opportunity to do a mini 16-page X-Men comic book for a Hardee’s Kids meal (issue #4 “The Time Gliders”). 

Near the end of my 15-year-career in law enforcement, I met a talented, up-and-coming artist by the name of Greg Harms.  He and I teamed up and did 4 books for Blue Water productions entitled The Tenth Muse and after working on some personal properties that now go under the studio of Third Empire, Greg and I have some cool books Modus Operandi (Greg’s creation) along with starting back up the Lynch Mob (picking up from issue 4) Issues 5, 6, are done and the series will be ongoing,   We also have several coming up, such as The MidKnights, Control Syndicate, and more.

AMA-Con 2015 Volunteer Forms Now Available

AMA-Con is a few weeks away and we want YOU to volunteer!
Volunteers get free admission to the event and a free AMA-Con t-shirt.

You must be at least 16 years or older to volunteer OR have been actively involved with Amarillo Public Library teen programming throughout the last year.

Volunteers must be in good standing with the Amarillo Public Library and are subject to a background check.

Please read the attached guidelines and fill out the volunteer agreement and signup form. These may be turned in at the Downtown Library or scanned and emailed to benjamin.wilting@amarillolibrary.org. Volunteer applications must be completed by July 17 in order for background checks to be completed before the con. You will be notified by July 24 if you are approved as an AMA-CON volunteer.

Official AMA-Con 2015 Hotel Announced

Exciting news! Amarillo’s Wyndham Garden is the official hotel of AMA-CON 2015. The hotel is holding a limited number of nights for AMA-CON guests Friday through Sunday, July 31 through August 2, at a special rate of $99 per night. This rate includes one of Wyndham’s excellent guest rooms, access to onsite amenities such as the fitness room and indoor pool, and a hot breakfast in the morning. Meet AMA-Con 2015 Special Guest Far Away Creations

Far Away Creations is a husband and wife owned practical effects studio based in Loveland, Colorado.  They have contributed to films including “Paul”, “Fanboys,”, and “The Lone Ranger”.  Their type of practical effects primarily include costume, prop, and set design while they have plans to become more involved with makeup effects and creature design.   During their 16 years so far in the industry and hobby they have supplied custom works for fans, enthusiasts, reenactors, and cosplayers.  Their goal is to become more involved in the film industry as well as offering their talents and services to various contractors anywhere from video game prototyping and promotion to themed venues.  They also travel with their life size replica movie sets or interactive displays to conventions for self promotion as well as providing photo opportunities for convention goers.

Meet AMA-Con 2015 Vendor Monster’s Lair Comics

This will be our third year selling at AMA-Con!  We specialize in Vintage through Modern comics.  Our booth set up includes about 10,000 $1 books from all publishers, and a nice selection of key issues, 1st appearances, and CGC graded books.  We will also be bringing some toys, books, and other comic/movie/sci-fi related merchandise!  This is a convention I always look forward to, and can’t wait for the multi-day show.  I do take want lists, and requests, so if there are comics you are looking for, please let me know!

Registration Deadline Approaching

It’s almost the end of April and the nerdiest of months is upon us – MAY!  With that being said, remember that you have until Thursday of next week (Thursday, April 30th) to register and get our $100 booth rates.  On May 1st, the cost for your first booth goes up to $150, with prices for additional booths remaining the same.

Meet AMA-Con 2015 Special Guest Sonny Strait

Sonny Strait is a voiceover actor with a wide resume, including such memorable characters as Krillin in Dragon Ball Z, Usopp in One Piece, Maes Hughes in Fullmetal Alchemist, and Cartoon Network’s Toonami Tom.

Mr. Strait is also a professional comic book artist, working as a colorist on Dark Horse’s Elfquest series and his own web comic called We Shadows. We Shadows, was published by Tokyopop and was nominated by The American Library Association for Best Graphic Novel in 2008. The book received glowing reviews in many trade magazines including Publishers Weekly, Newtype, Play, and Anime Insider.

In addition, he has also worked as a writer and director on several TV series including Dragonball Z, Case Closed, and Lupin the Third.

Amarillo Public Library and Amarillo Symphony are teaming up to bring Video Games Live to Amarillo during AMA-CON! Video Games Live is an immersive concert event featuring music from the greatest video games of all time. Created and produced by industry veteran video game composer Tommy Tallarico; top orchestras and choirs around the world perform along with exclusive video footage and music arrangements, synchronized lighting, special fx, solo performers, electronic percussion, live action and unique interactive segments to create an explosive one-of-a-kind entertainment experience.
PRE-CONCERT ACTIVITIES
– Guitar Hero competition starts 1 hour prior to concert; winner plays on stage with the Symphony.
– Costume contest with winner selected from the stage just prior to the concert.

POST-CONCERT ACTIVITIES
– Meet and greet reception with game industry luminaries (open to all ticketholders)
